5 Resume Mistakes First-Time Job Seekers Make

Your first resume doesn't need fabricated experience to be strong — it needs to avoid a handful of mistakes that quietly cost interviews.

1. Listing duties instead of outcomes

"Responsible for handling customer inquiries" says nothing. "Resolved 40+ customer inquiries a week, maintaining a 95% satisfaction rating" says everything. If you can attach a number to it, do.

2. Using one generic resume for every job

A resume tailored to the specific listing — matching its language, highlighting the two or three most relevant points — consistently outperforms a one-size-fits-all version, even when the underlying experience is identical.

3. Burying the good stuff

Recruiters skim. Your strongest, most relevant line should be readable in the first five seconds, not buried under a paragraph of objectives no one reads.

4. Ignoring formatting consistency

Mismatched fonts, inconsistent date formats, uneven spacing — none of it is disqualifying on its own, but together it reads as carelessness. A clean, consistent layout signals attention to detail before anyone's read a word of it.

5. Skipping the proofread

A single typo won't sink you. Three will. Read it out loud, or better, have someone else read it — you're too close to your own resume to catch everything.

None of these require more experience to fix. Just a closer look at what's already there.
